Are you frustrated of consuming food items that are loaded with chemicals, but do not know how to choose organic vegetables and fruits? Read on to know about the 10 easy tips of checking whether you are choosing stuffs that are organic.
Even though this rule in not introduced in India yet, still sometimes the vegetables and fruits which were actually packaged for export purpose end up in the local market. You can check the sticker pasted on them. Let us understand what the sticker means:
- 5 digit code beginning with 9 means that they are organically grown.
- 5 digit code beginning with 8 means they are Genetically Modified
- 4 digit Price look up Code or PLU means grown with pesticides
In India, we usually have typical 4 digits PLU which signify that they are grown with pesticides.
2. Check the Size
Organic grains, vegetables and fruits come in normal sizes. Even though you may all go “wow” seeing the huge sized capsicums, cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and potato, still it is advisable not to use them in your meals. There are exceptions of course, where people organically grow big size vegetables and fruits, but they are typically very rare.
If food items are organic and natural, no two food items will look the same ever. It is impossible to find two fruits, vegetables or other food stuffs that look 100 percent alike. Always remember the fact that no two leaves of the same apple tree will appear just the same.
In the same way, each potato, tomato, mango or even a small grain will differ from the other. The structure, shape and color of the organic and natural vegetables and fruits will always be inconsistent. For example, if you check organic chana dal (split Bengal gram), you will find varied shades of yellow in the packet, instead of identically bleached yellow of the usual packet of dal.
4. Check the Label
Well, we all eat first with our eyes! But do not make this mistake while purchasing edible stuffs. Even though you get fascinated seeing big grains, bright red kidney beans or vibrant yellow lentils, still do not make the purchase in haste. Instead, check the label of the products to determine whether any preservatives are used. Always remember the fact that most of the preservatives are petroleum based. You definitely do not wish to consume it!
5. Smell it
Do you know that the texture and aroma of organic food is very strong? For example, organic spices will have a potent fragrance and flavor. This is due to the fact that they maintain their oil content. When it comes to non-organic spices, the oil is already extracted and sold independently in the market. Thus, the spices are devoid of the oil. Additionally, non-organic spices are highly adulterated. Try both organic and non-organic spices like jeera or ajwain and you will surely understand the difference.
6. Instant Cooking
Organic food cooks much faster as compared to non organic food products. Simply be careful with organic food; just a stroll from your kitchen to the living area may burn your dish.
7. Good Shelf life
Usually people believe that organic fruits and vegetables do not have shelf life. But it is actually not true. Simply store them in your refrigerator and they will last for at least a week or fortnight.
As compared to non-organic food stuffs, organic vegetables, fruits and other edible food items are far healthier. They are easily digestible, which helps in reducing gas, acidity and other related gastrointestinal problems. You are sure to feel healthier, lighter and livelier.
9. The Taste Test
Organic food stuffs are tastier. While cooking organic vegetables, you will require much less spices or herbs as they already have great taste and natural aroma. In the same way, organic fruits are extremely juicy as they are not plucked till they are ripe. In comparison, non-organic fruits are ripened with the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals.
The proverb “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is just applicable for organic apples!
10. Checking the Insect Way
Even though you may cringe at the site of worms in your grain containers, but it brings in good news! It confirms that these food items are organic. This is due to the fact that naturally grown lentils, white rice, brown rice, wheat and other stuffs will get insects in a few months, especially during the rainy season. Actually, the insects also know that non-organic food stuffs are simply not edible.
Simply remember the fact that insects do not contaminate your food, but pesticides sure do. So, simply use the traditional way of placing the grains under the sun and they will be good to use in a few hours.
Now you know the 10 easy ways of determining organic food stuffs, choose the organic way of eating and living healthy.
